Safety Eyewear Programs for Safety Distributors

This page is for distributors rather than end users. Safety distributors are regularly asked for prescription programs by customers who already buy their gloves, hard hats and non-Rx eyewear - and prescription is the one line that is genuinely hard to service, because it needs lab capacity, prescription handling and per-employee administration. Rather than turn the request away or refer it to a competitor, partner on it.

Eye Hazards in Safety Distributors

Prescription is hard to stock

Rx cannot be held as inventory - it is made per employee. That is exactly why it does not fit a conventional distribution model and why partnering beats building.

Per-employee administration

Eligibility, allowances, approvals and reordering are ongoing account work, not a one-off transaction.

Compliance exposure

Supplying non-compliant prescription eyewear carries real risk. Z87-2 frame marking is the detail most often missed.

Losing the wider account

Customers who go elsewhere for prescription often move adjacent PPE lines with it. Covering Rx protects the rest of the basket.

What the Standards Require

Programs supplied to your customers are built to ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 and support their obligations under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.133 and 1926.102. Prescription eyewear is supplied on Z87-2 marked frames with the impact, splash and dust markings each customer's hazard assessment requires.

Markings are the practical check: if a prescription frame does not carry Z87-2, it is not compliant protective eyewear regardless of how it is sold. Our labs supply every pair marked to the ratings your hazard assessment calls for.

How the Program Works

We set the eligibility rules, allowances and approved frame list with you, then employees order for themselves through the benefits-managed marketplace - so nobody handles expense claims and you keep a live compliance record. Every pair is made to prescription in an OSHA-compliant lab and shipped direct. See the full frame and lens range, or start with a 12-frame sample kit so your team can handle the frames before you commit. Writing the policy first? Frequently Asked Questions

Does the employer have to pay for prescription safety glasses in Safety Distributors?

It depends on the eyewear. Under OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132(h) the employer must pay for required PPE, but there is a specific exemption: non-specialty prescription safety eyewear does not have to be employer-paid provided the employer lets employees wear it off the job site. Anything specialty - prescription inserts, sealed or gasketed frames, welding filters, or eyewear that cannot reasonably leave site - falls back under the employer-pays rule. Most Safety Distributors programs are funded anyway, because a company-paid allowance is what actually drives compliance.

Why not just stock prescription safety eyewear ourselves?

Because it cannot be stocked. Every pair is made to an individual prescription, which needs lab capacity, prescription handling and per-employee administration - none of which fit a conventional distribution model. Partnering covers the line without building that.

Do we keep the customer relationship?

Yes. The program is supplied under your relationship, with the lab network, ordering platform and fulfilment handled behind it. If you would rather introduce the account than run it, there is a referral route - see the partner program.
